Disputed earth: geology and trench warfare on the Western Front

June 14 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

£5

Geology often controls the outcome of battle, and no more so than during the trench warfare of the First World War. It was this conflict – a war of trenches and dug-outs; of mines and mud – that epitomised the struggles of commanders and soldiers as they battled against the obstacles set for them by the terrain. In this illustrated talk, based on his recent book, Disputed Earth, military historian, Peter Doyle, will highlight just how important the geology of the Western Front was to the war.
