Exploring Latin Poetry

November 21 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

£5

Workshop

The early modern period saw a flowering of English poetry from figures such as Shakespeare and Milton. But Latin was still being used by everyone from schoolchildren to scholars.

This workshop will offer an introduction to contemporary Latin poetry in English archival sources, including using original manuscripts held at The National Archives. Together we will learn about what people wrote and why they used Latin, and try your hand at translating some Latin poetry.

The workshop will be jointly run with Dr Victoria Moul, the leading expert in Latin-English bilingualism of early modern English literary culture at King’s College, London. There will be a break during the workshop for tea and coffee.

This event is part of the Being Human Festival.

£5, Friends £4, book ahead.
