‘May it please you sir, I am a poor man’: the Victorian poor

April 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

£5

There are few images more Victorian than those of the poor law union workhouse. In this talk, Dr Paul Carter, editor of Pauper Prisons, Pauper Palaces, will examine the competing notions of 19th century welfare. Paul will question whether, at a time when Britain was the workshop of the world, the welfare on offer was harsh, restrictive and cruel, or reasonable, comfortable, and more to be likened to an asylum for the poor.

Book ahead.
