Webinar: Festival of Britain 1951
January 9 @ 12:00 pm - 12:45 pmFree
The initial quest for government to mark the centenary of the Great Exhibition in 1851 – and a ‘tonic for the nation’ after the war years – gave rise to The Festival of Britain.
The festival became a five-month public display of sciences, arts and industry design from May 1951 at the London South Bank site to local arts festivals.
A plethora of public commissions were initiated by this government-sponsored celebration; from artworks by emerging and established artists, musical and dramatic performances, to all kinds of industrial design – all highlighted in documents from our collection .
This webinar will look at the historical context of the Festival of Britain, and the fascinating records created during its planning and organisation – in the form of minutes, contract documents, photographs and original artwork as part of the commissioning process.
This event is online only.
