Zeppelin! The ‘silent raid’ of October 1917

October 19, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

In 1917, Germany developed a new class of Zeppelin capable of flying at 20,000 feet – beyond the range of Britain’s defence systems. Although free from attack, the Zeppelin crews had new battles to fight – altitude sickness, sub-zero temperatures, and unpredictable weather. In the 11-Zeppelin raid in October 1917, the civilian population suffered 90 casualties but fierce winds conspired to defeat the raiders. Drawing on official documents from our collection, Ian Castle will explore this, the last great Zeppelin raid of the First World War.
