SUMMARY:Open Gardens - Kew Green
DESCRIPTION:As part of the National Gardens Scheme\, the beautiful private gardens from 69-73 Kew Green are open again in May.  The long gardens run for 100yds from the back of historic houses on Kew Green down to the Thames towpath. Together they cover nearly 1 acre\, and in addition to the style and structures of the individual gardens they can be seen as one large space\, exceptional in London. The borders between the gardens are mostly relatively low and the trees and large shrubs in each contribute to viewing the whole\, while roses and clematis climb between gardens giving colour to two adjacent gardens at the same time.  Children attend free.  Teas\, including wine\, available at nearby St Anne’s Church Hall.

SUMMARY:Q2 Players - Laburnum Grove
DESCRIPTION:Kew’s Amateur Theatre Group\, the Q2 Players\, stage “Laburnum Grove” by J.B.Priestley.    Set in the 1930s in the North London suburb of Shooters Green\, it’s the story of George Radfern who is a decent\, respectable householder. He likes to spend his Sunday evenings in his greenhouse listening to the wireless. When his money-grasping relatives try to coax money from him\, the façade of middle-class respectability falls away\, as George reveals he has a completely different side to his character. Is this a ploy to scare off the spongers or is there more to it? The play observes the changes in family dynamics as the various members come to terms with what George reveals. Tickets here:

SUMMARY:How To Forecast The Weather
DESCRIPTION:With increasingly extreme weather patterns due to climate change\, The Kew Society invites you to a talk by Dr. Florence Rabier\, Director-General\, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for insights into this rapidly evolving predictive technology. \nWhere:  The National Archives\, Bessant Drive\, Kew \nWhen: 6.30pm\, Friday 9 May 2025 \nTickets available on the door:  Members £5/non-members £10 \nYou can also purchase tickets in advance via Eventbrite here \nWeather prediction is complex\, with ever expanding data from satellites and surface sensors and sophisticated computer models based on the laws of physics. The last few decades have seen significant improvements in the ability to make accurate predictions. However AI has the potential to drastically improve weather forecasting\, making it even more accurate and faster. \nWhile traditional models can provide accurate forecasts\, they rely on immense computational power which limits their use. AI’s ability to predict the future based on vast amounts of data at unprecedented speed is transforming the sector. \nIn her talk\, Florence will describe the way traditional physics-based weather prediction works and how it can be combined with AI to move to next-generation forecasting.

SUMMARY:Designing for Biodiversity in the City Garden
DESCRIPTION:Cameron Macfie of The Conscious Gardening Company sits down with Daniel Lee of Teasels Biodiverse Design & Consultancy for a fireside chat on creating biodiverse gardens in urban spaces.\nIn London’s compact garden spaces\, there’s a growing appreciation of the role domestic gardens play in addressing biodiversity loss. But how do we design spaces that work for the modern household — while also supporting wildlife?\nThey’ll talk through what to do (and what not to do)\, practical steps for garden transformation\, and how to balance aesthetics and habitat creation. The talk will be followed by an open Q&A with the audience. \nNibbles and Drinks provided \nReminder: Please bring jackets or jumpers as this is an outdoor event. \n** Please be advised that this event is being recorded. If you prefer not to appear in any filmed content\, kindly inform a member of our team at the start of the event.**

SUMMARY:Kew Society Talk - Kew Road Ha-Ha : Ditching Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:The Kew Society invites you to a talk exploring the history of the Kew Road Ha-Ha. \nIf\, like me\, you thought that the ditch running along the edge of the Old Deer Park Sports Grounds on Kew Road was just that\, a ditch\, you’ll be fascinated to learn that in fact it has a rich history dating back to at least the 17th Century. \nThis talk will explore a rarely appreciated landscape feature\, the Ha-Ha. Made not to be seen but to create incredible views Ha-Has are fascinating elements of landscape history which sometimes survive long after the manors and views they were originally associated with have vanished. This is certainly the case for the Kew Road Ha-Ha\, the main focus of this talk. A seemingly unassuming wall and ditch that most people pass without noticing\, it tells a story of palaces\, gardens and the development of Kew and Richmond. It is now lingering in a state of disrepair\, but the current project led by Habitats & Heritage hopes to bring appreciation back to this Ha-Ha. \nThe talk will take place at The National Archives\, Bessant Drive\, Kew on Tuesday 15 April 2025\, 6.30pm given by Jess Vining\, Heritage Project Officer at Habitats & Heritage. \nTickets will be available on the door:  Members £5\, Non-members £10.

SUMMARY:Steve Simpson - Seven Decades of Picture Making
DESCRIPTION:Kew Studio invites you to a retrospective exhibition at the Studio in honour of Resident Artist Steve Simpson\, who very sadly passed away in June 2024. \nThe exhibition will be open to view by appointment for the next month\, but Kew Studio will also be holding a public open day on Saturday April 5th\, from 11-5pm. Please come along on this day to share with Kew Studio members in remembering and celebrating Steve and his inspiring and beautiful work. \nSteve began drawing cartoons as a teenager at school and later received commissions as a freelance artist. Specialising in communicating complex\, challenging ideas and concepts with humour and simplicity\, Steve’s cartoons\, illustrations and graphic design were used by a wide range of organisations. Over the past three decades Steve expanded into more personal paintings\, drawings and prints. His work used bold forms\, colours and tone to explore the borderlands between representation and abstraction\, drawing inspiration from landscape\, travel\, music\, story and myth\, as well as personal experience. Figures – human\, animal and avian – found their way into his paintings and he explored abstract composition in a series of tightly hatched drawings made using a Uniball pen. Steve felt his work often seemed to have a life of its own\, taking him where it wanted to go. In this sense\, picture-making acted as a form of spiritual exploration\, an attempt to give expression and form to life’s light\, shadow and ultimate mystery and bring order to chaos.
