DESCRIPTION:Kew Theology and Gardening invite you to a talk by Peter Popham\, journalist and author\, on Tuesday 10th March 7:30pm in St Anne’s Parish Hall on Sam’s Paradise – How an old-fashioned Englishman in Sri Lanka brought a tropical forest back from the dead – by weeding. This story is told in the book DAMBULLA – a Sanctuary of Tropical Trees\, written by Peter’s friend & distant relative\, Sam Popham\, which was first published in 1993 with the support of Kew Gardens and its first Director of Conservation\, Grenville Lucas. He is married to Kazia\, and they have one daughter\, an andesthetist. He won scholarships to both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music\, London. Accepting the latter\, he studied for five years with Eric Harrison and Bernard Roberts\, representing the College in foreign tours and in master classes\, and was a finalist in the Chappell Gold Medal Competition. \nSoon after leaving the Royal College of Music\, Anthony Adkins was awarded a London début recital at the Wigmore Hall. He then won the coveted Chopin Fellowship from the Polish Government enabling him to work with the eminent Professor Jan Hoffmann at the Academy of Music in Kraków. On completion of these intensive studies\, Professor Hoffmann’s assessment of Anthony Adkins was profoundly simple -‘a great artist’. \nSince then\, Anthony Adkins has played for innumerable important occasions and has frequently appeared at the Wigmore Hall and the South Bank\, London. He has toured the UK extensively and engagements abroad have included Austria\, France\, Germany\, Holland\, Hong Kong\, Poland\, Spain\, Sri Lanka\, Switzerland and the USA. \nHe has often played in the presence of the Royal Family and heads of states\, and is in demand as a member on jury panels for international piano competitions. A programme about him was recorded for BBC radio and he has broadcast on Radio Poland\, German and Sri Lankan television. \nAnthony Adkins was made a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in His Majesty\, King Charles Ill first Birthday Honours in June 2023.

SUMMARY:Kew Village Market
DESCRIPTION:In the lovely leafy setting of Kew village\, with around 50 stalls selling quality food and crafts\, and live music from local bands\, KVM is famous as the finest\, friendliest market in the area. It’s run entirely by local volunteers and all the operating profits are donated to local charities – they’ve donated an amazing £108\,000  since the market launched in October 2011. Cheques will be presented to three local charities at the November market. \nThe market is back on 1st February 2026  – the first market of the year with over 40 stalls and great live music from local acts. \nVisitors can look forward to shopping with many of their favourite regulars\, selling award-winning food and hand-made crafts & gifts. There will be great street food (from Colombian\, curry and crepes through to Italian treats\, sizzling bacon and sausage rolls and tasty falafel wraps). Visitors can try locally cured charcuterie\, cheese\, fresh fruit and vegetables\, nuts and much more. \nThe charity stall for February will be Vineyard Community and Richmond Foodbank who operate seven foodbank sites across the Borough of Richmond\, in partnership with Trussell. With the aim of empowering our local community\, the charity provides emergency food provisions and offers support work to those in need. \nThe live music tent will see the return of two local acts –  Jasper the Mandolin Minstrel at 10.30am and Mandolin Jack at 12.30pm. \nStalls for our market on 1st February can be found here: https://kewvillagemarket.org/stalls.  \nThe committee are always looking for local residents willing to help organise and run the market. At 10.30am we welcome back The Perrin Jazz Collective. They will be followed by The Hanwell Ukulele Group who were so popular last Christmas at 12.30pm. \nVisitors will be able to prepare for Christmas shopping with many of their favourite regulars\, selling award-winning food and hand-made crafts & gifts. There is also great street food (from Columbian\, curry and crepes through to Italian treats\, sizzling bacon and sausage rolls and tasty falafel wraps). Visitors can try locally cured charcuterie\, cheese (that’s featured in Waitrose’s new Christmas ad)\, fresh fruit and vegetables\, nuts and much more. \nThe charity stall for December will be Kew Rotary selling festive Pimms. Kew Rotary are a small and active club. Locally concentrating on youth projects\, schools\, community groups\, charities and with the students of the Royal Botanic Gardens. International projects support Rotary’s focus on water and sanitation. \nWe’re always looking for local residents willing to help us organise and run the market.
