DESCRIPTION:Join the Kew Society for an Open Mic Poetry evening in the teepee at Trindle Stores\, Kew on 27th June.  To celebrate the arrival of summer they’re hosting a second evening of poetry readings. Please bring and read your own poems or a favourite poem. The aim is to create a relaxed community of people in Kew who are interested in reading\, writing\, listening to and talking about poetry.  If you would like to perform at the Open Mic\, please register by sending an email to poetry@kewsociety.org or you can register on arrival. All readers will be given a slot of 5 minutes and the order of reading will be first come\, first served. \nDoors Open at 6.30 pm\, with Poetry Readings 7.00 – 8:30\, and the event ends at 9pm. A pay bar will be available. SUMMARY:Kew Society Talk: Reflecting on the Restoration of Furnished Rooms at Kew Palace
DESCRIPTION:Twenty years ago\, in April 2006\, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 80th birthday in the newly restored Dining Parlour at Kew Palace. Empty of its original contents\, it was one of several rooms refurnished to replicate the period when occupied by George III\, Queen Charlotte and some of their daughters between 1801 and 1812.  This talk will cover the archival research undertaken\, which led to the sourcing of appropriate fabrics\, designs and contemporary items required for this smallest and least ostentatious of royal palaces. \nAnnabel Westman MBE\, FSA is a textile historian\, lecturer and consultant who has worked on a wide variety of significant restoration projects for heritage bodies and museums in the UK and abroad.  Pertinent to this talk on Kew Palace\, she worked as the adviser on textiles with Historic Royal Palaces.  Her many publications include Fringe\, Frog and Tassel: The Art of the Trimmings-Maker in Interior Decoration (NT & PWP\, 2019). \nThe talk starts at 7:30pm and the doors will open at 7:00pm. The cost for members will be £5 and for non-members it will be £10. Tickets are available through Eventbrite  (fees apply) or on the door.

The last few decades have seen significant improvements in the ability to make accurate predictions. However AI has the potential to drastically improve weather forecasting\, making it even more accurate and faster. \nWhile traditional models can provide accurate forecasts\, they rely on immense computational power which limits their use. AI’s ability to predict the future based on vast amounts of data at unprecedented speed is transforming the sector. \nIn her talk\, Florence will describe the way traditional physics-based weather prediction works and how it can be combined with AI to move to next-generation forecasting.

SUMMARY:Kew Society Talk - Kew Road Ha-Ha : Ditching Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:The Kew Society invites you to a talk exploring the history of the Kew Road Ha-Ha. \nIf\, like me\, you thought that the ditch running along the edge of the Old Deer Park Sports Grounds on Kew Road was just that\, a ditch\, you’ll be fascinated to learn that in fact it has a rich history dating back to at least the 17th Century. \nThis talk will explore a rarely appreciated landscape feature\, the Ha-Ha. Made not to be seen but to create incredible views Ha-Has are fascinating elements of landscape history which sometimes survive long after the manors and views they were originally associated with have vanished. This is certainly the case for the Kew Road Ha-Ha\, the main focus of this talk. A seemingly unassuming wall and ditch that most people pass without noticing\, it tells a story of palaces\, gardens and the development of Kew and Richmond. It is now lingering in a state of disrepair\, but the current project led by Habitats & Heritage hopes to bring appreciation back to this Ha-Ha. \nThe talk will take place at The National Archives\, Bessant Drive\, Kew on Tuesday 15 April 2025\, 6.30pm given by Jess Vining\, Heritage Project Officer at Habitats & Heritage. \nTickets will be available on the door:  Members £5\, Non-members £10.

DESCRIPTION:Imagine porcelain ceramics several metres high! Felicity Aylieff is an artist and professor at the Royal College of Art in London and is renowned for creating dynamic hand-thrown and painted porcelain vessels on a grand scale.   So she’s just the person to explain how such monumentally tall pots can be made!  Felicity’s work is currently on display at The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew\, London\, where she is exhibiting towering pieces over 5 meters high.  Working in the city of Jingdezhen\, China\, the ancient home of porcelain manufacture\, Felicity has developed lasting partnerships with teams of local experts. These have allowed her to realise her ambitions and push the limits of porcelain\, this most challenging and captivating of materials.  The Kew Society are delighted to welcome Felicity to share her experiences of collaborating across cultures and the creativity this has inspired in her work.  She will talk about her career and recent new body of work.  More details and admission prices here. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The Kew Society is delighted that Helen Bartolome\, Blue Badge Guide and Kew Society member has kindly agreed to lead another of her fascinating walks – this time focused around the historic Farringdon area\, bordering the City of London. \nThe stroll around this area will uncover its history and note the considerable changes which are occurring – Farringdon is a stop on the Elizabeth Line; Smithfield Meat Market\, which has been associated with the wholesale trading of meat since medieval times\, is soon to relocate to Dagenham – some of its buildings will house the new Museum of London. \nKew Society members only.  Tickets £12 \nclick here to book tickets  \nOr email events@kewsociety.org to request a ticket
