Talk: The Costliest Painting in Christendom

Judith May Evans had a successful career in the corporate sector until a vivid dream led her to writing in Tuscany, where she lived part-time for sixteen years.

She discovered a fragment of stained glass in the local church was painted by the medieval master, Pietro Lorenzetti, and that the frescos in the nearby abbey of San Galgano were painted by his brother, Ambrogio, led her into the world of Sienese art and its vibrant colours. The celebrations surrounding the installation of Duccio’s Maestà, the costliest painting in Christendom, in Siena cathedral inspired the opening chapter of her book, Colours of Siena.
