Kew Fete celebrates £20,092 raised for local charities as the current committee bids farewell
KEW FETE CELEBRATES DONATIONS TO 15 LOCAL CHARITIES TOTALLING £20,092 AS THE CURRENT COMMITTEE BIDS FAREWELL
After another fantastic day and great turn out on Saturday 20th June this year, the exciting news is that the final amount raised by Kew Fete in proceeds has exceeded original expectations, reaching £20,092.
This has now been donated to 15 local charities, rather than the expected 10, and the good causes, listed below, include those supporting young people’s mental health and employment, carers, bereavement counselling, disabled children, the local environment, cancer support, assistance with homelessness and food poverty and volunteer help with driving, shopping, gardening and companionship in the Kew community.
This latest figure brings the overall total raised and donated to local charities by Kew Fete since it was revived in 2010 to an incredible £265,000. This remarkable achievement is down to the work of the dedicated volunteer committee, under the Chairmanship of Mike Glazebrook, most of whom have been involved since the start 16 years ago, making this annual highlight in the Kew calendar come together. “The decision to step away was incredibly hard for all of us as a brilliant team who have honed their individual roles and responsibilities to perfection over the years and become good friends along the way, but this amazing total raised over 16 years is a great legacy and we know we are leaving the Fete in capable hands.”
The incoming Chairman and local resident, Stephen Bates acknowledges he has big shoes to fill but has found several enthusiastic volunteers ready to take on the challenge alongside him and keep this much-loved local event going “Kew Fete is a day everyone in the community looks forward to and my own children, now in their 20s, remember it fondly while I’ve often volunteered on the day and see the huge amount of work involved. It would be a tragedy for it not to continue, especially as Mike and his team of volunteers have put their heart and soul into establishing it and raised such an incredible amount for local charities, most of which don’t get lottery funding and are vital to the community.
It may be a well-known phrase but it really does ‘take a village’ including the support of sponsors and local businesses as well as volunteers to collectively stage such a fantastic event, enjoyed by thousands. We know it’s been featured 4 times in Time Out magazine as a great summer day out and we intend to build on the excellent work of the previous committee.
