Kew Sparkled! £2000+ raised for Charity

An outdoor event in early December always comes with its risks. While the evening of Kew Sparkle was a little damp, it was wonderful to see the community wholeheartedly embracing the spirit of this much-loved Christmas event held on 5 December, setting the scene for Christmas 2025.

The music was uplifting and the fabulous lights twinkled among the trees. A truly family-friendly occasion, there was entertainment for all ages. Santa was immensely busy in his cosy grotto at Trindles, while the funfair rides brought squeals of delight from younger visitors.

The Snow King and Queen were unmissable as they stood tall on their stilts, mingling with the crowds. We were also joined by Basil and Crew—a gentle menagerie of sheep, goats, donkey, Shetland pony, lambs, ducks and chickens. The appearance of the Fire Brigade, complete with their shiny red fire engine, was another highlight, with many children delighted to sit in the driving seat and try on helmets.

The main stage programme opened with a magical Nutcracker-themed ballet performance by the Richmond Dance Collective. This was followed by hearty carol singing from choirs representing several of Kew’s primary schools. Later in the evening, the audience enjoyed musical treats from the Rock Choir, local band Forty Love and singer Nova Skipp. The programme was expertly compered by Radio Jackie’s Nicky Patrick, who engaged warmly with performers and audience alike.

Kew Village’s wonderful independent shops were open for business alongside 40 market stalls, offering a tempting range of Christmas shopping opportunities. In addition, the internationally inspired street-food stalls proved hugely popular throughout the evening.

Kew Sparkle is organised by a dedicated local committee of volunteers. In addition to raising funds for the village Christmas lights and staging the event itself, it supports a chosen local charity—this year, Small Steps, a fantastic organisation supporting children with physical disabilities and their families. This year’s event raised more than £2,000 including raffle ticket sales and donations from village traders who ran competitions in support of the charity.

Kew Village would not sparkle without the tremendous support of the local community. Fundraising activities included a wine-tasting evening in association with The Good Wine Shop, a fundraising dinner hosted by The Tap on the Line, and generous donations made through the website www.kewsparkle.org. Local businesses provided valuable sponsorship, schools contributed through Christmas Jumper Days, and the volunteers who helped on the evening were invaluable.
