🌞 Staying Safe in the Summer Heat 🌞
Simple Tips for a Safer, Cooler Season from Kew Neighbourhood Association
As the summer sun begins to shine, we’re sharing some simple, practical advice to help you stay well during the warmer months. While many people enjoy the sunshine, it can pose health risks—especially for older adults, people with existing health conditions, or those living alone.
At Kew Neighbourhood Association, your wellbeing is at the heart of all we do. Whether you receive lifts from our volunteers, support with appointments, or regular friendly calls, we’re here to help you stay safe, cool, and connected this summer.
☀️ Why Heat Can Be Harmful
Hot weather can affect the body in many ways. It can worsen conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and mental health challenges. High temperatures can also increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or in more serious cases, heatstroke—which requires urgent medical attention.
🧡 Who’s Most at Risk?
Some people are more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather. These include:
• People over 65
• Those with long-term health conditions
• People who are housebound or live alone
• Pregnant women
• Anyone struggling with mobility or memory
✅ How You Can Stay Cool and Safe
Here are some steps you can take to look after yourself and others during hot spells:
• Drink plenty of fluids (water is best) and avoid alcohol
• Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day
• Go outside in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler
• Wear light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses
• Avoid sitting in parked cars – even with the windows down
• Use a cool damp cloth on your neck, wrists or feet to lower body temperature
• Check in with neighbours or friends—a friendly chat can make a big difference
If you feel unwell or notice symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache or confusion, don’t wait—call NHS 111 for advice. In an emergency, always dial 999.
🧊 Local Cool Spaces
There are places in the borough where you can go to cool down if your home gets too warm. These “Cool Spaces” will be listed on the council’s website soon. If you’re unsure how to get there, contact KNA—we may be able to help with a lift.
